An estimate for one full month (October 2026) under Zambia's payroll rules in force, not tax advice. It leaves out what is listed as not included.

Not included:
  • The council personal levy, a small yearly amount paid to the local council, is not worked out here.
  • Workers' Compensation is not worked out here: the employer pays it once a year to the Workers' Compensation Fund Control Board, by the risk class of the work.
  • LASF, the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund, applies only to councils and some utilities, and is not worked out here.

The rules in force from 1 January 2026. Read the source.

How it works

What each line on the payslip means.

  1. Where do the figures come from?

From the payroll engine our clients run their payroll on, with the Zambian payroll rules in force for the month you are in. The rules and their source are named under the result. The calculator works in your browser, so nothing you type leaves this page.

  2. What is PAYE?

Pay As You Earn: the income tax an employer takes from pay each month and pays to the Zambia Revenue Authority. It is worked out on the taxable pay across the bands in force, and the table under the result shows how much of the pay falls in each band and the rate on it.

  3. What are NAPSA and NHIMA?

NAPSA is the national pension scheme and NHIMA the national health insurance. Each is shared: one part is taken from the person's pay and the employer adds its own part on top. When a contribution is worked out on pay up to a ceiling, the result says so.

  4. What does the business really pay?

More than the gross pay. The employer's own NAPSA and NHIMA shares and the Skills Development Levy come on top, and the right-hand column adds them up as the true cost of the person.

  5. Is this the exact figure on the payslip?

It is an estimate for one full month on basic pay and regular cash allowances. Anything else on a real payslip, and anything listed under Not included, changes it. For a payroll that handles all of it, see our payroll service.
